  • What is the difference between a Psychiatrist, Psychologist and Psychotherapist?"
A Psychiatrist is a medically-qualified and fully trained Medical Doctor who has specialised in Mental Health and is able to prescribe medication, and has worked as a Doctor in General Medicine and Surgery for at least a year, followed by at least six years of Specialist training in Psychiatry in order to gain skills and experience in helping people with Psychological problems. A Psychiatrist has special skills to assess the person’s mind, emotion and behavior in order to reach the accurate diagnosis and to apply the appropriate treatment plan which includes Psychotherapies and medications if necessary. Though Psychologists have a degree in Psychology and Psychiatrists, all of the Clinical Partners that we work with have extensive training and qualifications, and are either accredited or members of a regulatory or governing body. A Clinical Psychologist has a University degree in Psychology. After gaining further experience working in relevant healthcare settings, Clinical Psychologists then obtain a Postgraduate degree Master or Doctorate Clinical Training in an approved training scheme at a University. A Clinical Psychologist often uses psychometric assessments, and is also trained to apply several therapeutic models such as Cognitive Behavioural, psychodynamic/systemic etc. The Psychologist is primarily concerned with the study of how people think, act, react and interact. For further information about Psychology, please click here to visit the British Psychological Society website. A Psychotherapist can come from different professional backgrounds, may be a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, or another mental health professional who has had further specialist training in Psychotherapy. By applying different theories, a Psychotherapist can suggest methods of interventions or strategies for resolving problems and, if necessary, help you change your attitudes and behaviour. The most common is probably Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In CBT, the Therapist helps you look at and change any unhelpful ways of thinking that may be interfering with your life.
